Why not use Family Tree Maker?

Since its been taken over by the new owners, MacKiev, it's been fully supported - http://www.mackiev.com/ftm/

It's available for Mac and PC. It will happily synchronise with Ancestry, so there's no need to faff about with gedcom files.

If I want to work on my iPad then I'll use the Ancestry app (agree it's not great) or their web site. Safe in the knowledge that every change will be automagically copied across to FTM when I next start it up on the desktop. Rather than me having to get on the Ancestry site, export a gedcom, import that gedcom, make some changes, export a gedcom, import that gedcom into Ancestry - phew.

I currently have the original FTM for Mac but it became very onerous sorting out 'duplicates', an annoying gremlin due to syncing with Ancestry. I may check out the newer version to see if my iMac can handle a new version on it's older operating system.
