Margaret Cross birth and death??

Postby brimo » Thu Jan 05, 2017 9:02 am

Morning everyone

Whilst I'm waiting for the death cert to come for Thomas Cross (see thread at topic14445-30.html) I thought I'd delve into his wife's birth and death ie Margaret Stowbridge.

I can see her on the 1851 census here
Liverpool Sub-registration district Islington ED, institution, or vessel 1cc
Household schedule number 76 Piece 2185 Folio 510 Page number 22

O the 1861 census here
Liverpool Sub-registration district St Martin. ED, institution, or vessel 8
Household schedule number 179 Piece 2650 Folio 151 Page number 32

On the 1871 census here
England Registration district West Derby. Sub-registration district Toxteth Park. ED, institution, or vessel 22
Household schedule number 28. Piece 3812 Folio 33 Page number 5

I have her marriage cert from 19th April 1845 but both ages are marked as "Full"

I cannot find her after 1871 - she is marked as being 60 years old on that. I cannot find any further residence nor any death.

Hope I have submitted the information correctly.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Margaret Cross birth and death??

It might be useful if you wait until you have the death certificate for Thomas and let us know what it says. This will indicate who informed the Registrar - it could be Margaret. It could also indicate whether Thomas was a widower, in which case you might be able to work out a death period for Margaret.
Just because an individual is not on the census with the expected family/address doesn't mean they have necessarily disappeared. The census only records the one night in question. Individuals may have been staying with relatives, in hospital, in an institution, etc so may be recorded elsewhere. Sometimes a wider search may be needed. A friend once 'lost' an ancestor but eventually found her in a hospital for infectious diseases with two other family members. She had been missed off the transcription.
Depending on what you find on Thomas' death certificate, there is a death for a Margaret Cross - Liverpool 8b 156 Dec qu 1886. Unfortunately, the age has not been included on the freebmd site so may not be her.

The GRO death index shows the Margaret CROSS who died in Q4 1886 in Liverpool RD to have been 67 at death.

MMMMmmm !! That looks like it might be her. Is there any other way of seeing further details or is it a case of taking a chance and ordering the DC?

Margaret's age does vary somewhat on the census returns. In 1851 she was 34 and a Stay Maker
In 1881 in West Derby Union Workhouse there's a Margaret Cross, widow, 61, Staymaker, born Liverpool.
Whoever that person was, if she stayed in the workhouse it might bring in the Margaret Cross death in West Derby in June 1885 (age 64)
Ages given in workhouse records are not always accurate - only last week I found a lady given as 50, when she was about 70. Her settlement exam confirmed it was her - it gave her marriage date (she would have been 5 years old on marriage according to that!)
It looks as though it might be rather risky to buy any specific Margaret Cross death certificate at the moment, without a bit more investigation.
Have you found her daughters in 1881?

Hi Ian

That's a bit of useful information. Where would I get to see those West Derby Union workhouse records please?

Hi
I'd imagine any workhouse records would be at the archives in Liverpool. The problem will be, how much has survived? It varies from place to place. Unfortunately when you most need them, they don't have them.
Usually the Board of Guardians Minute Books are available, but you would be lucky indeed to find a mention of a particular person in them.

But we don't know that your Margaret is the lady in the workhouse in 1881. I agree that it would be good to pin down her death. That may be a lot easier than finding out anything about her birth!

Can I ask where you got this info from Ian? It'll be something worth my while chasing up. I'm only in Runcorn so could visit Liverpool easily :-)
