MMmmm !! Cannot find anything else. Have looked for Margaret beyond the 1881 census where she was shown to be an inmate in West Derby Union Workshouse, Liverpool. See attached file.

I'm now going to see if I can see what happened to her early daughter called Harriett or Hariett b.1832? See if I can find her on a census. I can see her on the 1851 census aged 14 years old so maybe b.1837?

I can find on FindMyPast a Hariett Cross who got married to Frederick Miles on 20th May 1866 Vol 8B Page 101 but I cannot see anymore and would have to buy the cert on a long shot. Why doesn't Ancestry.com find this record?

Any help would be appreciated as I feel I'm getting bogged down and getting no-where :-(

Hi
Marriage was at Liverpool St John, 27 May 1866
Is on ancestry, Liverpool, England, Church of England Marriages and Banns, 1813-1921
Name: Harriet Cross
Birth Year: 1839
Age: 27
Parish: Liverpool, St John
Spouse's Name: Frederick Miles
Father's Name: William Cross
Spouse Father's Name: Charles Miles
Reference Number: 283 JOH/3/15

Frederick died shortly after?
Death, Dec 1866 W. Derby 8b 350
Miles, Frederick
age 29

Possible quick remarriage!
Dec 1866 Liverpool 8b 222
Cottom,John
Miles, Harriet

Was at Liverpool St Nicholas, 4 December 1866
Her father - William Cross
also on ancestry.

Thomas Cross is most unlikely to have been Harriet's father anyway. We think he was born circa 1823? We haven't found Margaret and Harriet in the 1841 as yet. Margaret's origins are still a mystery.
And I agree that it seems unlikely that Thomas Cross died in the cholera hospital in 1849. From shoemaker to bricklayer seems too much to swallow without a lot more proof.

Hi Ian

Firstly may I thank you for your help with this. I want you to know that it is much appreciated.

I have a census from 1841 which shows a Thomas Cross aged 18 living in Liverpool and he's down as a shoe-maker then so I definitely think we are correct in thinking that the guy in the cholera hospital wasn't our man.

Thanks for the details of Harriet's marriage. I think I'll order the marriage cert when I get home from a short break I'm taking from tomorrow but.... a few concerns. If Harriet Cross's father was a William Cross then this might have been one of Thomas Cross's siblings William born about 1810.

A second quick re-marriage is interesting. Sounds like that'll fit in too.

As something that might turn out to be useful a cousin recently told me that the Stowbridges came from Cockermouth area.

Thanks again

That marriage doesn't look too promising, from the details Harriet gave.
Possible second marriage at St Nicholas later in the year
4th December 1866
John Cottom, Full, Bachelor, Engineer, father George Cottom, Engineer
+
Harriet Miles, Full, Widow, father William Cross, Joiner
residence for both Hunter Street
both marked
witnesses William Duncalf, Mary Ann Duncalf

It probably depends on the subscription options you have. Each price rate allows you to view different records.
