Any records of troops in Ireland 1890s?

Sun Jan 01, 2017 12:28 pm

Hello,
I am doing some family research on the Irish side and am trying to find more information about an ancestor about whom all we know is his name, that he was English, in the British military, and that he spent some time in County Kerry (Ireland) in the 1890s. Are there any military records which might help to give more details about him?
Many thanks.

Assuming you mean that he was in the Army in the 1890s, then yes, there are records that might help.

Start with the different pages linked to by http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides-keywords/?show=keywords&keyword-letter=b&keyword=british-army#step-three. There are various sources described there - the one bit that is unlikely to be all that helpful is his deployment to Co. Kerry as it's actually quite difficult to come at things from that angle.

Try and spend some time with the pages, reading carefully as there are all sorts of things to look at.

The worst case scenario is that he died in service without a widow as in that case his records are likely to have been scrapped.
