Daughter away from family?

Postby LJayne03 » Fri Dec 30, 2016 12:29 pm

I have a Louisa Jane Eaton (born abt 1869 in Hackney) on my tree (my 3rd great aunt)

Her parents are William Eaton (1830) and Sarah Lewis Jones? (1836-1872)

I have a baptism record for Oct 1969 in Hackney, an 1871 census in Wales with her family, then 1881 census in Lincolnshire. Her father, step mother and 2 brothers are in Wales in 1881, but she's in Lincolnshire?

Can anyone confirm this is definitely her for me? And if so, why she's away from her family?

Was she in service or working in some capacity? It was quite common for children to move away from their parents for work.

She was 12 years old in the census where she's away from her family, she's put down as a Boarder and Scholar

Self explanatory then. She was away at school. That was quite common although you may want to find out more about the school she was at by checking earlier pages in the census.

Louisa was indeed at a school in 1881. Although she is the only boarder/scholar listed.
Run by the Leckenby sisters.Their ladies school at Sunny Side House, Albert Road, Cleethorpes, is listed in 1880's Lincolnshire directories.

I thought that could be possible, just thought it odd she was the only one there

I would double check that she's not living with relatives
I have a few ancestors who are shown as boarders and or lodgers but are in fact living with uncles/aunts - aunts of course would be shown under their married name so might not be immediately obvious

As Dene said, she may have been with or near relatives. There may be other siblings or cousins living nearby so it might be worth checking consecutive pages in the census.

Any idea what happened to Louisa Jane after 1881?

I will check the census pages.

No Ian, I have no record of her after the 1881 census
