Morning Everyone

That was quick.... I have received both birth certicates ie Margaret b. 1849 and Hannah b.1849 and both confirm father as Thomas Cross shoemaker which is great news.

They are both shown on the 1851 census below and ages are correct but Margaret Cross is shown as Widow and is Head of household so I need to find Thomas Cross's death. I also need to find my Great Grand-fathers birth. His death cert in 1928 at age 78 points to him being born in about 1850 but is that a 7 or a 1 on the 1851 census and where is his birth?

William on the 1851 census certainly looks to be 7 years old !! so born 1843 or 1844?

It seems very likely that William was illegitimate. Hence his later use of his mother's Stowbridge name. In itself that wouldn't rule out Thomas Cross being his father, but perhaps makes it less likely.
Who does William say his father was when he married?

Interesting that when Margaret Stowbridge married Thomas in 1845, her own father is not named. They were both single, but her daughter Harriet was born circa 1836-7 according to the 1851 census.
So the chances of finding a birth registration of William as Cross do seem slim.

You could always get the death certificate of the Thomas Cross who died in the cholera hospital, see if it might still be the shoemaker.

Brimo, you'll remember the burial entry for a Thomas Cross who died of cholera in Liverpool in 1849, age given as 34, so born about 1815? You thought this wasn't your man, as yours was born about 1823.

I've now checked this death against the GRO death index, which gives the age at death as 24, not 34, so born about 1825, which could be your Thomas. If you want to take a chance on sending for the death cert, the GRO reference is SQ 1849 Liverpool 20 279.

On Thomas and Margaret's marriage certificate, is it clear that Stowbridge is her maiden name? That is, not a surname from a previous marriage?

Marriage cert shows Thomas Stowbridge, a cooper as Williams father and Williams name is down as William Stowbridge.

sdup26..... I think I'll send for that death cert today :-)
