Sorry, am I missing something? Which William Cross birth certificate are you ordering?

There is a birth reference for Margaret in 1849 with the mother's maiden name as Stowbridge: -

CROSS, MARGARET STOWBRIDGE GRO Ref: 1849 D Quarter in LIVERPOOL Vol 20 Page 318

I've also found the following birth reference: -

CROSS, HANNAH STOWBRIDGE GRO Ref: 1847 S Quarter in LIVERPOOL Vol 20 Page 374

I hope this helps. I'll see if I can find any more.

Here are the references to the William Cross births I found in Liverpool at around the right time:-

CROSS, WILLIAM BOYLE GRO Ref: 1840 S Quarter in LIVERPOOL Vol 20 Page 397
CROSS, WILLIAM JAMES FRODSHAM GRO Ref: 1843 S Quarter in LIVERPOOL Vol 20 Page 297
CROSS, WILLIAM MOSS GRO Ref: 1845 D Quarter in LIVERPOOL Vol 20 Page 438

The mothers' maiden names are in bold and, as you can see, none of them was a Stowbridge, so it appears that Thomas' birth may not have been registered. I also checked for the birth of a William Stowbridge but couldn't find one.

I checked the GRO website, FindMyPast and Ancestry. Am I missing something that someone else has found?

In 1851, Margaret Cross (nee Stowbridge) lives with daughters Harriet, Hannah 1847, Margaret 1850, and son William 1844. Ages on censuses are often a year or two out either way, so it might be worth risking a tenner on the birth of William Cross Dec Q 1845, Liverpool, 20 438.

This is the cert that I was thinking of ordering. It's one that I hadn't found anywhere?

Good spot from Kay - the William birth I suggested was DQ1845 L'Pool 20 438, but if the mother was Moss, he's not our man. Sorry brimo! Kay has also found births for Margaret and Hannah. As Harriet is listed as born 1837, she may have missed civil registration, but might be on Liverpool baptisms.
The mention of a Thomas Cross dying of cholera is on ancestry's Liverpool records, and pete 25 has supplied the burial record.

This is the one with the mother's maiden name of Moss so probably isn't the correct certificate.

Is there any mileage in getting these birth certs and seeing who the father is? It might give us a clue as to who he was and if he was Thomas Cross whether or not he was still alive at those dates?

Yes as they should give the father's address and occupation plus the name of the informant.

If you enter Liverpool as the registration district, it narrows it down even further.
