Ancestor born in India?

Postby Blueglory1505 » Fri Dec 23, 2016 11:21 am

Hi there

I'm trying to trace the early life and family of my 4x Great Grandmother Eliza TROWELS.

She was born c. 1827 and in various censuses gives her place of birth as East Indies (1851 & 1871), India (1881) and what looks something like Beylou India (1891). I haven't been able to find her in the 1861 census yet.

She married Ebenezer BRUCE in Witham, Essex in 1844. Her marriage certificate gives her father's name as John TROWELS but that is the only information I have for him and no information on her mother. As far as I can see she spends her life following her marriage in Essex, has at least nine children (including my 3x Great Grandmother Myra) and dies in West Ham in 1900.

I have no experience in tracing ancestors with links to India so I wonder if anyone can find out any information or give me any tips as to where I might look?

Many thanks

She's in Little Braxted in 1861. Transcribed Brun on ancestry.
piece 1196 folio 117 page 5
Ebenezer Bruce Head Mar 37 Master Bricklayer employs 4 men, born Essex Great Totham
Eliza Bruce Wife Mar 34 Bricklayers Wife East Indies
Alice Keziah Bruce daur 4 Scholar Essex Little Braxted
Frances Elizh Bruce daur 2 Essex Little Braxted

In 1891 her birthplace is given as Ceylon, India.

It's a terrible pity that Eliza says she was born in the East Indies/India, rather than the West Indies!
Ebenezer and Eliza Bruce were in Wickham Bishops in the 1851 census.
Going back to 1841, in Wickham Bishops
piece 339 book 10 folio 4 page 2
John Trowles 45 Pensioner, born Essex
Mary Trowles 45, born Ireland

And indeed, there's an army service record for
John Trowell, born Hatfield near Witham
attested Witham 20 December 1814 for the 9th Regiment of Foot
Age 18, trade Laborer
Served in the West Indies, 1819-1837
Discharged in 1838

We await the experts in records for India

1841 census has Eliza Trowles, 15, Female Servant, in High Street, Maldon, Essex
piece 345 book 1 folio 16 page 16
At a drapers by the look of it.
Says that she was not born in the county. Apart from the Irish Mary in Wickham Bishops, she may be the only one with that "Trowell" kind of surname to be a not born in county in 1841 in Essex.

That's brilliant thank you!

I think Trowell must be the name as that's how it is spelt everywhere except Eliza's marriage certificate as far as I can see.

John Trowell - of the 9th Regt Foot - army service record is quite clear on the places he served: France, West Indies and 'home'. As Eliza's place of birth is always recorded as somewhere in the east, maybe her father is someone different - yes, possibly a soldier, but one who died in service, hence has no 'Chelsea pension' service record.
Will look further, but slowly as am still without a proper computer (in the workshop).

Absolutely right, Sylvia
Says that John Trowell served in the West Indies, from 3rd April 1819 to 3rd February 1827 (not 1837, as I typed, seemed rather long)
Seven years and ten months

Still a pity it wasn't in the East Indies!
On the other hand, if Eliza was born circa 1826-27 then she would not have any memories of being abroad.
Perhaps she had it wrong about where she was born? (clutching at straws here!)
