Missing!!

Postby fhb » Sun Dec 04, 2016 7:48 am

I'm researching a CHANDLER family.
I have them in the 1911 rg14_01015_0117_03 father Alfred (45 - b 1866) mother Kate (45 - b 1866) son Charles (21 - b 1890). They claim they were married 26 years before (in 1855).
I have them in the 1901 LNDRG13_204_205-0335 father Alfred (35 - b 1865) mother Kate (34 - b 1867) sons Frederick (16 - b 1885), George (14 - b 1887), Charles (11 - b 1890) plus brother-in-law Frederick BAMFIELD (33 - b 1868)
I have Alfred in the 1891 LNDRG12_179_181-0417 and LNDRG12_179_181-0416 with his brother Frederick and his brother's wife Kate.
From the above I note that in the 1891 Alfred says he is Single and as I cannot find a marriage of Alfred CHANDLER to a Kate around 1855 I am inclined to believe that their 1855 claim is a "marriage of convenience"
When Alfred died his youngest son Charles registered the death and stated that he was the Step-Son of Alfred. That says to me that the other two children were also step-sons as they are older than Charles.
So I believe that Alfred took on the previous children of Kate when they got together. On the 1901 Frederick BAMFIELD is stated to be the brother-in-law of Alfred so I believe that Kate is Kate Ellen BAMFIELD.
I cannot find a birth registration of the three boys, George (William Ernest), Frederick or Charles under CHANDLER or BAMFIELD or a variety of mispellings. Neither can I find a previous marriage for Kate Ellen BAMFIELD. And I cannot find the children nor Kate in the 1891.
One further problem is that the age of Frederick BAMFIELD of 33 in 1901 (1868) doesn't sit too well with the birth the brother of Kate Ellen in 1878.
I have a horrible feeling that I am mixing two families here!!

Can I ask how you found the three registrations? They each had slightly differing mother's names and the family name was unknown!

Hi
I looked up George William Ernest Chandler on the 1939 Register. Confirmed his birth date.
Looked for any George William E birth in the relevant quarter(s) in 1863 on Free BMD
Then went to the GRO website, where a new birth index gives their full names and the maiden names of the mothers .
Found George William Ernest Maslin, Dec 1863, Shoredith, mmn Banfield.
Then looked for births of Frederick and Charles Maslin
I don't know whether the variations in spelling of Bamfield are on the certificates or are caused by transcription errors.
