Trying to find a soldier

Postby Maudie » Fri May 09, 2008 8:13 pm

Can anyone enlighten me on how to go about finding out what regiment etc my paternal grandfather could have been in.

On the Scottish 1901 census, his wife was described as the wife of a resrvist soldier, and being that year, I assume he would have been involved in the Boer War.

However, no other records refer to his being a soldier, and so I have no idea of what part of the army he could have been in.
In 1881 he had been in an Industrial school and I assume he may have been put into the army on his discharge from there. Unfortunately no records exist for the school as far back as then.

At the time he was living in Greenock Scotland, so most likely he would have been in a Scottish regiment.
How can I find out which regiment he would have joined?
He died in 1913 so was not involved in the first war.

Any clue would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
