Crews of RN ships are called the 'ships company', whereby all members are given an official number when they sign on to join the service. In olden days crew members were issued with a number when they joined a ship which became their muster number sometimes used to identify the men and for ships pay etc i.e. a ship with a crew of 200 men and officers would number the men 1 - 200. Often times men on a warship would only be addressed by their ships number and seldom by name.
