London Street Names 1882 and 1918

Postby lottie's mum » Mon Nov 14, 2016 3:01 pm

Hi
I'm still trying to unravel the Drew family. I have today received some PDF certificates from GRO which help, but I'm trying to figure out the street names of the informants on both certificates. Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to upload the pdf on to here (I have renamed them so don't know if that is the issue). Can anybody help me in where to look for London Street names for these eras so I can see if I can find anything and see if the streets are close to other addresses I have or can anybody help in how I can upload the certificates to enable forum users to interpret. Thanks

London Street Names 1882 and 1918

If you list the street names and dates, I'll happily help you find them, as I have a few historical maps of london.

As for up loading the PDF, I believe they take up a lot of memory, and I think over the size limit of images you can post here. Are you able to scan them from a printed copy? If not, you could always e-mail them to me, and I'll see what I can do.

Thank you Mick

Tried scanning, but still too big so will have a go at reducing size as the 1882 birth may help me find the family in 1881 if I can figure out the street - looks like Halpeci Street,Walworth

1861 New Street, Newington
1871 Hard Street, Newington
1881 - Can't find them
1882/3 Halpeci ? Street, Walworth
1885 Acre St, Walworth
1886 Townsend Street
1891 Globe St, Newington
1893 & 1896 Hollington Street, Camberwell
1918 Sultan Street, Camberwell (died in Constance Rd Institution)

I know that Walworth, Camberwell and Newington are all very close together

Birth certificate scanned as a JPG - hopefully it can be read. I'm trying to decipher the Street address which is in both the place of birth and address of informant

This is a death certificate for a sister - I'm trying to decipher the address of M Drew, informant (another sister)

I think the 1882 address may be Halpin Street, Walworth. Possibly it should have said Halpin Place? So often on those Victorian certs the letter n looks like u.
1918 ought to be Norroy Road, Putney. Could perhaps say Norrey, but Norroy Road is still there today!

My trusty London A-Z gives Halpin Place, Walworth and Norroy Road, Putney. Of course they may have been named 'Street' in the past.

Some success, and have included some directions for you to locate them on a modern map:

New Street is modern day Braganza Street, which can be found just by Kennington station, off Kennington Park road.

Modern day Halpin Street, was called Farlow Street in 1888, so unlikely to be what you're looking for.

Townsend Street is just off Old Kent Road, 1 or 2 on right, south from Bricklayers Arms.

Globe Street, from Borough Station, follow Great Dover Street (A2), and Globe Street is 2 or 3 on the right.

Sultan Street, follow Walworth Road/Camberwell Road south from Elephant and Castle, turm right into Wyndham Road, then right again into Crown Street, this leads to Sultan Street.

Still looking for Hard Street,Acre Street & Hollington Street

Halpin Place is still around today. Being called Halpin Street might have been an error on the certificate, there seems to be no sign of one there in the census, etc.
