Louis Coward death search

Postby gillashcroft1 » Thu Nov 10, 2016 3:54 pm

Hi

I'm trying to locate a death record for Louis Coward. He was born to Frederick and Jane Read Coward in June 1882 in Preston, Lancs.

I have him through the 1891 & 1901 UK census. In 1902 Preston he married Ethel Bonney Elston.

I have him following other family members to US in 1906 & 1907. After that there I can find no trace of him.

In 1911Ethel is back in Preston with son Fred (born Preston 1904) stating she is a widow. She then goes on to marry William Coward (his brother) in 1912 where it states she is widowed. There is another son Charles born 1910 in US. Both sons state Elston as mothers maiden name.

The current evidence seems to suggest Louis died between 1909 and 1911 although if Charles is William's son then it could be between 1907 and 1911. I have no evidence to say who Charles father is.

I haven't been able to find a death record for Louis and would appreciate any suggestions.

Many thanks
Gill

Where in the US did Louis and family go? Was it New Jersey?

Hi, I've got them arriving at New York, but Louis arrival in New York in 1907 is the last I have of him.

Ethel and William I have on the US censuses in New Jersey from 1920 to 1940. I also have their passport applications of 1922. I have a possible death for Ethel in 1963 in California where son Charles lived in 1940 and his death.

I've just found the California marriage licence for his son Charles in 1940 that does say his father was Louis so that sort of confirms he was around in 1908/09. If I've got the right death record for Charles he was born 30 Sep 1909.

Thanks for asking.

You've probably seen his 22 Feb 1907 Employee Card on FamilySearch. It gives his occupation and home address in Orange, NJ. I haven't seen a mention for him yet (if any) on Newspapers.com

Thanks MoVidger. I think I have seen the card before a long time ago but didn't record it at the time and struggling to find it again. I will find it again somehow.

It appears Louis Coward died sometime between the publication of the 1910 Orange, NJ city directory (available on Ancestry.com) and the 1910 NJ census. If so, the NJ State Archives should have the record of his death but you have to write for it. http://www.nj.gov/state/archives/catgenealogy.html

The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation has their passenger lists available:
http://libertyellisfoundation.org/

I gather you already found Louis' 1906 and 1907 manifests which say he was staying with Dr. E. Meyer and his brother, Henry Coward, respectively, in Orange, NJ. You can also find Ethel in 1908 saying her husband, Louis, was living at 115 (Ratway?), Carteret, NJ and again in 1911 as a widow in NY, NY.

Henry Coward is clearly living with his parents in West Orange Ward 5, Essex, NJ in 1910 but Louis is not there so I'm guessing he was deceased.
