Rose Eliza Brown In Stamford

Postby adrianwander » Wed Nov 09, 2016 12:12 pm

My great grand-mother Rose Eliza Brown was born in 1875 in Stamford. I can find her on the 1891 and 1911 census returns living with her "parents" James Joseph Brown and Ann. By 1911 she was married to Arthur Champley Richardson. I have put parents in quotes as these are not her birth parents. I have a birth certificate for Rose Eliza Brown born on the 17 November 1875 in Stamford with parents John Brown and Jane Grickson who married in Islington in 1870. I am confident that this is my Rose Eliza as on the 1939 register her birthday is given as the 17 November 1875 in Stamford. From baptism records I have found

Elizabeth Brown bap 13 October 1872
Sarah Jane Brown bap 15 March 1874 and
Rose Eliza Brown bap 28 May 1876 all in Stamford.

I also know that her father John died on 3 February 1878 and was buried in Stamford on the 7th February 1878. I would love to know what happened to the family after John's death and how she came to be with James Joseph and Ann. However I am totally unable to find the family on the 1881 census. Can anyone help?

She is also missing on the 1901 census. Her husband is with James Joseph and Ann but Rose Eliza is missing. I have no idea where she was? Again any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Adrian

It looks like Jane remarried quite quickly :

Jane Brown full age , father William Grickerson m John Chambers full age , father William Chambers 30 June 1879 St George Stamford.

The transcript doesn't say widow but that is self evident.

Still looking for them on the census.

I'm still not able to find the family in 1881. David W Chambers and John T Chambers are with their Grandparents and it seems likely that the other Brown and Chambers children may also be with relatives. There is a notice in the Stamford Mercury 26 March 1880 of a John Chambers being summoned by his wife Jane for using threats to her. He was bound over for 6 months. There is nothing to say this is the right couple but it could be.

You are amazing! Thanks everyone. The 1901 in Willesden looks good. The GRO index gives Frank Chambers born 1880 in Stamford mother's maiden name Grickson. But where was Rose?

I've found another report in the papers about John and Jane Chambers :

Reynold's Newspaper 2 July 1882

Marylebone :
" A Ruffian - John Chambers 41, a bricklayer , was charged with assaulting and beating his wife Jane Chambers. The wife stated she had been married to the prisoner for nearly 4 years , he being her second husband , and he was continually ill treating her. She had prosecuted him in Lincolnshire and he was bound over. Last Sunday evening she gave her child , by her former husband , some bread and butter , when the prisoner called her bad names , struck her face and knocked her against the wall and gave her two black eyes. She left the room and had not been near him since. She had not been out of the house since the birth of her baby five weeks ago. "

The article goes on to mention a Henrietta Bishop to whom Jane had frequently gone for help. John Chambers was sentenced to 3 months in prison with hard labour.
