William G Irving, my 3x great uncle, Westchester, NY, USA

Postby tommys » Sat Nov 05, 2016 11:16 pm

I am trying to trace my 3x great uncle, William Grierson Irving , born 1802 at Mouswald, Dumfries-shire, Scotland, and his family. His wife was Margaret Clark, born c1801, Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. They had 4 children - John, b1831, James, b1834, Elizabeth, b1835, all at Twynholm, Kirkcudbrightshire, and Maria Alston Irving, born 1839 at Kirkcudbright.

William was a gardener and in 1851 the family were at Crossmichael, Kirkcudbrightshire.

In a book which I found on Ancestry named 'Scots in the Mid - Atlantic States 1783-1883' I found an entry on page 129 which reads as follows.

Tait, David, from Dumfries-shire, married Marie Alston Irving youngest daughter of William G. Irving of Rosebank, Westchester, NY, there on 8 Nov.1866. [AO]

I believe this is who I am looking for but cannot seem to find them in any US Census returns, or other records.

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If this is them in the 1860 US census, then their birthplace has gone down as Ireland.

Looks very much like them, thanks for that ianbee, greatly appreciated. Gives me something to work on.

I checked findmypast and may have found the marriage of John to a Susan GIDCUM on 1 September 1863 at Lauderdale county, Tennessee.

Possible match for Maria Tait in 1870, living in Shelby, Tennessee:

David Tate, age 29, born Scotland
Maria Tate, age 29, born Scotland
Jesse, age 2, born Tennessee

In 1880, 13-year-old daughter Jesse is now living with her uncle John Irving in Shelby.

In the Memphis Daily Appeal newspaper (Dec 7, 1878), there is a brief Administrator's Notice relating to the estate of David Tait, deceased. John Irving is the Administrator, at Toll Gate on Poplar Street, Memphis, TN. In early November, John is selling David's horses plus related hack items in a private sale.

In the Memphis Public Ledger (Aug 30, 1878), David Tait is among 73 local people who have died of Yellow Fever in a 24-hour period. So far no mention of wife Maria in the local Memphis newspapers for the period.

That Memphis Public Ledger article (Aug 30) reported the Yellow Fever fatalities for that 24-hour period was "incomplete". The article talked quite a bit about how serious the local Yellow Fever epidemic was. Given that daughter Jesse is living with her uncle by 1880, there is the likelihood that Maria was also a victim of the epidemic.

In Memphis, an average of 200 people died per day from July 1878 to September 1878, due to the epidemic. Half of the city's physicians died, as well.

I think I found Maria Tait's death in the Shelby County Deaths. There is a M. A. Tait, Shelby County, 23 December 1875, aged 36. Cause of death was pneumonia, and states she was from Scotland. Maria's full name was Maria Alston Irving or Tait. Seems to fit.

From the Memphis Daily Appeal, dated Dec 25, 1875 :--

"Tait -- in this city, on the evening of the 23rd, in the thirty-sixth year of her age, Maria A, wife of David Tait. Friends and acquaintances of the family are invited to attend the funeral, from the residence on Poplar, east of Manassas street, this Saturday morning at 10 o'clock. Services by Rev Mr Steadman.
