Wedding photo from 1891 or 1907?

Postby GClark40 » Sat Nov 05, 2016 8:06 am

I have come across a very small and faded photo in a locket. The woman is almost certainly my great grandmother and it is clearly a wedding. She was married twice though - in 1891 and 1907. Is it possible to tell from the dress which of these dates it is ... and with what degree of certainty? Much appreciated - thanks.

I think this is almost certainly 1907 rather than 1891. I have put the photo through Photoshop to try and make the outfits easier to see. It's still hard to see the bride's dress but what I can see is that it is of a simpler design than the 1890s. It is easier to date the groom's outfit. He is not wearing morning dress which was normal before the Edwardian era for a wedding. Tuxedo's or suits with shorter length jackets became fashionable in the Edwardian era. His hat was also fashionable in the Edwardian era. Hence, on balance, I think this photo is 1907.

Cheers

Just a bit of lateral thinking - the church or chapel seems to have some fairly distinguishing features - if she married at two different places you might be able to tell from the building details which event it was.
