I've spoken with moderator Jon Bauckham, he recommended this Military help section as an appropriate area to post. Because I am new to the Forum a direct web link to my book may not be available to utilise; however, searching on Amazon (dot) com by title and my name will take you right to it. Additionally, you can search on Bookfinder (dot) com.
What makes this book unique is, due to the fact that military muster rolls (if they even exist) only go back to 1740, and locating soldiers' enlistment papers back to 1726 are extremely difficult, if not non-existent.
Author: Jeffrey Campbell
I would like to introduce everyone to my new book titled 'Deserted', which explores newspaper accounts of 1263 military soldiers who intentionally fled from their units across Great Britain from 1726-59. Similar to police-issued All Points Bulletins (APBs), the details provided in these articles include name of the accused, aged, personal features, (in many cases) birthplace, and any additional attributes the issuing regimental agents thought necessary to include. The supplied accounts remain unchanged, as they appear in the original newspapers, and it is with the greatest of hope that the reader will find this era, the eighteenth century, to be among the most fascinating of times in British military history.
Excerpt: "Also deserted out of said regiment between Corke and Limerick ROGER PENNY born in Hill-Martin in Wiltshire, about 22 years of age, 5 foot 7 Inches and a Quarter high, fair Complexion, light brown Hair, wears a gray coat, a dark brown Waistcoat with flat brass buttons, and a Doe Skin pair of Breeches. Whoever gives Notice to the military commanding Officer at Limerick, or to John Archer, Esq; in Dublin, shall have 30 Shillings reward for each of them."
Full name index included. Highly recommended for the military historian and family genealogist!
