Did her father leave a will? Assuming you are interested in the whole family obtaining a copy of his will might be a better initial 'investment' than a death certificate that could turn out to be irrelevant.
If the will does not mention her it would be reasonable to suppose she predeceased her father.

Hi Sparrow, thanks for taking the time to message me. Unfortunately, I have not discovered a will for her father John Marshall yet. Since initially posting this topic on the forum I have learnt through my oldest surviving relative that there was a rumour of an inheritance squabble possibly over a diamond ring belonging to Ethel May Marshall. I suspect no wills were made by either father or daughter.
Best wishes and regards,
John

There may have been an Administration record though which would be listed on the Probate Calendar on Ancestry and the government's Find A Will website. This might list the next of kin, if known.

Thank you ksouthall. Currently mid-holiday in Spain. Will check out Ancestry etc on return. Searching online here yesterday and discovered connection to Dunt family in Martham, Norfolk, that I had previously no knowledge of.

A bit of info re the March 1929 death registration -
The new death indexes on the GRO website, which go up to 1957, give full the names of deceased (in Sep 1910 there had been a change so that only first name and initial/s appeared. This lasted until June 1969, when it became two names plus initials)
Anyway, she is indexed as Ethel May Marshall, age 42.
Couldn't see her on the Yarmouth electoral registers though.

Many thanks Ian, that information is very useful. I will definitely order a death certificate as I am almost certain that Ethel May Marshall who died in 1929 is my great-aunt.
Regards from Spain, John

Ethel May's mother was buried at St. Nicholas' Cemetery in Great Yarmouth. It might be worth checking out who else is buried in Row 90. The Norfolk Record Office has the copies of those burial records but I understand they are difficult to read. The nice people at freereg might be willing to help, though.

County: Norfolk
Place: Great Yarmouth
Church name: St Nicholas
Register type: Parish Register
Register entry number: 176
Burial date: 10 Jan 1900
Person age: 36
Burial person forename: Agnes Mary
Burial person surname: MARSHALL
Burial person abode: Row 90

Many thanks to everyone who contributed to this topic.
I have studied the various records and believe that the death date of 1929 is the most likely on the balance of probabilities. I have therefore today ordered a death certificate using that information. Regards to all. John

Received Ethel's Death Certificate today. She died 7th March 1929, Southtown, Great Yarmouth. Poor Ethel died of pneumonia as a result of influenza.
This family mystery is now solved, many thanks to all involved.
Regards John
