2 Brick Walls

Postby chicks » Sun Oct 23, 2016 2:20 am

I have 2 females for the life of me I cannot find.
1. Alice Eleanor Belcher b 1861 East London. Last seen 1881 census barmaid in Holloway, nothing after this.
2. Eva Louise Thomas b 1896 Croydon, last seen 1911 census age 14.
They can't just disappear, can they? Some suggestions would be great.I feel as if I have looked every where

Hi
Birth reg, March qtr 1862, E London 1c 1
Belcher, Alice Eleanor
Do you have her date of birth?

If she never married, there is this possible death
Dec 1944 Essex S. W. 4a 102
Belcher, Alice E
age 82

In that district in the 1939 Register -
47 Cambridge Rd, Wanstead (+ Woodford Borough Council)
Belcher Alice E., born 26.1.64, Single, Old Age Pensioner

May have to scrub that one!
In 1911, just down the road from Wanstead, in Forest Gate, Alice Elizabeth Belcher, 47, single, born Wellingborough, Northampton!
Back to the drawing board.

With a page reference of 1 in the March qtr 1862 birth index, I would guess it is indeed likely that your Alice was born late 1861, or earlier than the 26th Jan.

Another possible death?
Dec 1887 St. Saviour 1d 69
Belcher, Alice
age 25

Well, we do have a birth date for Eva Louise Thomas. From her baptism, and a school record, it was 29 November 1896.
Could she have married away from Croydon, down near Brighton?
June 1917 Steyning 2b 621
Clark, Alexander - spouse Thomas
Thomas, Eva L. - spouse Clark

Now there are quite a lot of Clark-Thomas marriages, and subsequent birth registrations. But it's just about manageable, research wise.
Possible interesting birth -
June 1919 Croydon 2a 356
Clark, Eva M. L.
mother's maiden surname - Thomas

Hello Ian,
Thank you for your assistance. In regards to Alice born 28 Dec 1861.The death you mention of 1887 I had ordered the cert but not her.
As to Eva Thomas I will order the birth cert for Eva M to verify, certainly does sound interesting when the child also has the same christian name.

Can I suggest that, rather than the 1919 birth certificate for Eva M, you first get that 1917 marriage certificate that Ian highlights? The reason for me saying that is that the marriage certificate will give you the father of the 1917 Eva and therefore a decent chance of recognising that it's your Eva. Or not.

The 1919 birth certificate, on the other hand, may indeed tell you that the mother is an Eva, but it won't look any further back in time, so it's unlikely to confirm that it's your Eva, rather than another of the same name.
