Help please Nelly Knowlden nee Carpenter or Wood

Postby susanb » Thu Oct 20, 2016 5:29 pm

Hi

I'm hoping someone might be able to help with tracing my great grandmother. I know the details from when she married my great grandfather in May 1899 to her death in 1921. Her marriage certificate shows her father as Edwin James Carpenter (deceased) who was a carpenter, and the witness were E M Pullen and H Cole. Her age was shown as 23, on the 1901 and 1911 census her year of birth is 1877 and birth place is listed as Lambeth and Camberwell.

There are two Lambeth school records for a Nellie Carpenter with a date of birth of 12/4/77 with mother being Ann. On the 1881 census in Brook Street Lambeth, there is a Ann Carpenter 47 head nurse, Emma Carpenter 16 daughter, Dorothy Carpenter 5 daughter, Nelly Wood 4 visitor, Ethel Lowe nurse child. In the 1891 census Ann had married Robert Harmes and both Dorothy Carpenter and Nellie Carpenter were listed as boarders.

Emma Carpenter married George Pullen in 1886, so I fairly certain she was one of the witness at Nellie's wedding. From this I presume Nellie was born as Wood and changed her name to Carpenter when she went to live with Ann.

I have spoken to my aunt who said my grandmother tried to find out details about her mother in the 1970's, and she told my Aunt that her mother had said that she got visited by people in a carriage and were going to adopt her, but she moved before they came back, also Southampton Row was mentioned.

I can't find a birth record for Nellie Wood in April 1877, does anyone have any thoughts as to where I go next.

Thanks

On the 1881 census, where does it state that Nellie Wood was born please? I have looked for a birth but cannot find one with the place names in the later census records you give. Often girls called Nelly were originally Helen.

Thanks Jim

I think I've ruled out that Nellie, there's a 1881 census which has a Nellie Wood born in Horley in 1876. Horley is in the Reigate reporting area

Hiya. My approach would be to start with the several 'Surrey' Nellie Woods registered and christened between generous dates. ( If she was a visitor they may not have known her true age. ie School records show she would have been 3 yrs old on 1881 census date).
Then first eliminate the Nellies from the 1891 census returns.. It is still possible that she was recorded at home as well in 1881 if she was a true visitor, I have one of those doubles in my tree. Then if any are missing, look for deaths/changes in either birth parent to see if an adoption became necessary. I presume you have traced Anne's history to see if she was a relative. Jim

Have you ruled out the birth entry for Nellie Rose Carpenter DQ 1876, Camberwell, 1d 839?

This could be just a name coincidence, but there's a listing for an Edwin James Carpenter, of Rebecca Terrace, Rotherhithe, Surrey, who was admitted to the London County Council Asylum in June 1897, and died Nov 1906.
