Death of Lancelot Coltman

Postby Elizabeth Rymill » Sat Oct 15, 2016 4:12 pm

Can anyone help me find out when my grgrgrgrandfather died. He married Sarah Charlton on 8th October 1791 in Tanfield County Durham. Minister Jas Simpson Witnesses Joseph Greenwell and John Blaxton. Son Thomas baptised 22nd July 1792 Heddon on the Wall and daughter Jane baptised 15th February 1795 Tanfield. No more news of Lancelot but his wife Sarah remarried William Morton, dates given as November 1797 and 15th March 1798, she had 5 more children. So I can only presume that Lancelot died between 1795 and 1797. Any ideas?

Hiya. I found this at Durham Records Online. I didn't realise Lancelot was such a common name, there are quite a few listed there in 18c..
Lancelot Coatman baptised 1768 Biddick, Houghton Le Spring. I think you can pay for the record online £1.50p.

Yes, I have his birth, he was one of 4, but I can't find his death.

I had a quick look at Tanfield parish records on Familysearch. Unfortunately there was a change in the style of registers about the period you are searching and I think some pages were missing. I couldn't find a death.

I am presuming you think he died there. Have you tried a quick email to Durham records office to ask if they would look for you? I haven't used them for a long time but they were always obliging if you asked for a very specific search. The website is www.durhamrecordoffice.org.uk

As the death isn't recorded in an obvious place. What about Thomas and Jane's marriages. Was he mentioned there ?
