Help Wanted - Jane Wilson Sheffield

Postby cwright6 » Sat Oct 15, 2016 8:43 am

I am trying to breakdown a brick wall for my husband's family.

His grandmother Rose Ann Wilson was born in Sheffield Yorkshire on 04th October 1916. No father is listed on the birth certificate however I have been trying with to find further information on Rose's mother Jane Wilson. As I live in Australia I have only been able to utilise online records and have had no luck given the name is a very common name. So any assistance that anyone could offer on what to do would be appreciated. I cannot think of anywhere else to look.

Attached is a copy of Rose's birth certificate. The only clues are her mothers name Jane Wilson who was a Japense Stay Buste at 3 Brampton buildings.

I have been told Jane never married and died around 1955-1960. Given how common the name is and no other information I cannot track down the right Jane Wilson. Also attached is a marriage certificate for Tom Wilson - I understand that Tom was Rose's uncle (Jane's brother) and his address is given as 3 Brampton Buildings at the time of his marriage in 1925. So it seem he may be related. I have tried searching for Tom on various census records but can not track down a Tom with a sister Jane.

I would very much appreciate any information or ideas of where to look next.
Cheryl

You have slightly misread the wording on the occupation. I have not yet found 'stay buste' but a 'japanner' was someone who probably worked in the production of furniture. 'Japanning' was to use a lacquer type varnish - usually black - on the surface of a piece of furniture to imitate the style of Asian furniture - very popular at one time throughout Europe. This may help you a little to find more information on the 1911 census.

Hiya. Do you think it might be a misheard 'spray brush japanner'. It was also commonly used in the manufacture of tools such as planes (Stanley especially). In those cases, I think the japanning fluid was made from asphalt, and baked hard afterwards.

A bit speculative
1939 Register possibility for Tom and Emily?
29 Martin Street, Sheffield
Wilson Tom, born 15 Mar 01, Married, Marine Store Dealer
Wilson Emily, born 25 Oct 99, Married, Buffer(?)
Closed record

Birth
June qtr 1901 Sheffield 9c 534
Wilson, Tom

1901 census
piece 4363 folio 16 page 28, continues folio 17 page 29
Sheffield

Thos Wilson head M 39 Gen'l laborer (dittoed from earlier entry), born Middx Ldn
Sarah A Wilson wife M 39 Leicestrshr Leicester
Jane Ann Wilson daur 3 Yks Sheffd
John Wilson son 2 weeks Yks Sheffd

There's a fair bit of abbreviating here, not sure how much care the enumerator has taken. Could he have misread Tom as John?

I don't know where this is, but possibly Stanley Tools Sheffield site. Stanley Tools factory began as the Industry Works of James Arscott Chapman, listed in Goodman's Guide as a toolmaker and metal plane maker. The site was acquired by The Stanley Works in 1937.

Wow- thank you so much all for your fast responses!!

It is the first time I have used this forum !! I am amazed how helpful you have been.

Thank you "inane" It seems from the address in the 1939 register that you may have helped me crack the my brick wall !

Looking at the address I am sure Jane Dearden is the right person - there are other people at the address with the name Lillies . This was a name my mother in law has mentioned but couldn't say how it fitted in.

I now have some leads to follow - I will also investigate the John / Tom possible mis transcription and some of the occupation data.

Hi
Yes, that's her. Don't know where Ernest is at the moment.
Info from 1939 is -

Dearden Jane A, born 22 Jan 98, Married, Unpaid domestic duties
Liles Isaac, 6 Jan 94, Married, Garage hand labourer motor cars
Liles Robert, 28 Dec 85, Single, not previously employed Incapacitated
Smith Sarah A, 7 Oct 60, Widowed, Unpaid domestic duties

This could be how you came to hear of the Liles name -
Marriage
March 1952 Sheffield 2d 483
Dearden, Jane A - spouse Liles
Liles, Isaac - spouse Dearden

Good luck!
Ian
