Brick walls - Thomas Lister b. abt 1856 Leeds, Yorkshire

Postby rshaw20 » Wed Oct 12, 2016 10:04 am

I have hit some walls searching for information on my GG Grandfather Thomas Lister b. abt 1856 in Leeds, Yorkshire. I have been unable to find any records of him prior to his marriage to Gertrude Robinson on 5 August 1878 in the Parish Church of the Parish of St George Leeds (UKBMD ref CE44/D/111). I have also been unable to locate Thomas or Gertrude on the 1881 census.

Thomas and Gertrude had two children that I know of Ernest born 1882, baptised 9 Apr 1882 in the Parish of Emmanuel, Leeds and Ethel born 4 Jan 1887, baptised 6 Jan 1887 in the Parish of St George, Leeds.

Thomas' occupations are listed as silversmith (1878), jeweller (1882), jewellers assistant & silversmith (1887), jewellers assistant (1891 census). He is also listed on Ernest's marriage certificate as a clock maker (1910).

There is a possible reference to Thomas in 'An Accident Prevented' in the Leeds Mercury, 23rd March 1883, a Mr Thomas Lister - assistant to Messrs. Pearce & Co, jewellers, of Commercial Street prevented an accident by bringing a runaway horse to a standstill.

Thomas and Gertrude were not together on the night of the 1901 census, Gertrude and Ethel were at her sisters Anne Elizabeth Chapman, Ernest was visiting Jemmima (head) and her son William Gemmell. I have found no death record for Thomas and one potential record on the 1910 census for a Thomas Lister, boarder age 42 (b. abt 1859, Leeds) siversmith's salesman ((Piece: 4232; Folio: 39; Page: 15)

Any assistance would be appreciated.

What about the Thomas Lister suggested elsewhere some years ago. Have you eliminated him?
Baptised at Leeds St Paul, 20 February 1867
born 24th Octr 1855
Thomas
son of John Ashworth and Mary Ann Lister (Ashworth being a middle name)
5 Britannia Yard Saville Street
father a Mechanic

Family in Britannia Yard, Leeds, in 1861, father John was a Pipe Layer for Gas
This Thomas Lister was with his widowed mother Mary A. in 1871. Occupation Cloth Mill Hand. Nothing like a jeweller, but he was only 15.

On the marriage of Thomas to Gertrude Robinson, father John Lister was given as an Engineer . They
are not at the address they gave - 5 Bedford Place - in the 1881 census, nor at the address on the 1882 baptism of Ernest.

Abraham, an older son of John Ashworth Lister, gave his father's occupation as Fitter on his marriage in 1867.

If John Ashworth Lister (pipe layer for gas) is your Thomas's father, he may have been a rather colourful character. A man of the same name was acquitted of assaults in 1837 and 1841, before being found guilty of another in Oct 1842, Yorkshire, West Riding. "John Lister alias Ashworth, age 27, cloth dresser, married with 3 children. Mother living. Born Halifax. Lives Castle Street, New Road End, Leeds. One calendar month."

A John Lister was living in Castle Street in 1841 with wife Mary Ann and children John and Susannah, but described as an 'iron playner' (sic). In 1851, Mary Ann and children John, Susannah, Abraham, Henry and Elizabeth are all living with Mary Lister, widow and mother-in-law, but no John.

Thanks for the replies.
There appears to be no record for Thomas or Gertrude on the 1881 census in England, which is curious.
In regards to John Ashworth Lister, I have been unable to confirm or eliminate him as Thomas' father.

Like you, I can't find Thomas and/or Gertrude in the 1881 UK census, using name variations and just initials. I also tried a world search on ancestry, in case they had a spell abroad. It's possible they were in the West Riding but for some reason, missed being enumerated. Altogether, very frustrating for you.

But some positive news - Thomas, and Gertrude had a daughter, Clara, baptised 3/9/1884 at Burley St Matthias, and they were living in Beaker/Banker?? Street. Thomas is a jeweller on the baptism entry.
