Lower Mitton Hamlet Parish Records 1775

Postby mjcosj » Thu Sep 29, 2016 11:39 am

I am searching for James Mathews/Matthews who according to to the 1851 census (where he is living with his son another James Matthews) came from Lower Mitton Hamlet which was swallowed up by Stourport Upon severn in the late 1700's.
History says that Lower Mitton consisted of just a few houses that were all but demolished to make way for the Canal Basins.
The transcriber of the 1851 records has recorded James senior's name as 'JASHES' an obvious mistake.
I am unable to find any Parish Records for Lower Mitton or any record of who lived there; please can you suggest any productive avenues that I could examine?
Many thanks.

Some information about Lower Mitton's church can be found at http://www.worcesterbmsgh.co.uk/parish/lower-mitton.

As you will see, the original registers are at the Worcestershire Archives and the SoG have transcripts.

Hi
Have you seen the baptisms for James Matthews junior and his siblings at Wolverley?
James 12.6.1814 s of James and Mary Matthews
Mary 6.3.1812,Sarah 20.7.1817 and Samuel 24.1.1819.

The 1831 census for Wolverley has survived .It gives all names and ages for each household so could well be worth a look if you're in Worcester archives.
Be sure to take the ref no as their catalogue is not good BA 1693/2 mf X985.91

Lower Mitton seems to be in Kidderminster parish and the early cenuses for that have also survived 850 BA 4766/8/i

all the best

Hi Ciderdrinker
Many thanks yet again for your help.
The only information that I could raise for Lower Mitton was a child birth followed by its death 3 years later so you information helps me with more avenues to explore.
Thank you.
