Warren family Devon

Postby grandmabear » Wed Sep 28, 2016 3:27 am

I am researching William Warren born west ogwell Devon. Our Ancestor is his son John Warren born 1854 Devon. He married Mary Howe came to New Zealand in 1874.
We have little information on William except he was a railway worker. We would like to find out who his parents were if possible and a little more about the family.
Also on reading about Warren as a surname there seems little about the Devon ones and their history and how they got to Devon. Most of the information seems to be in Surrey .
Hoping someone might be able to help.
We have Williams childrens names and birth years and his wife's name as Susan Daymond but not sure if this is correct..
Thank you
Jan

John, 6 b. Bishopsteignton
Charles, 4
Louis ,2
Ellen, 2mths
all born various places around Devon.
Dad b. abt 1828

In 1851: HO107; Piece: 1870; Folio: 354; Page: 13 he is already married with 3mth son, William

In 1841: HO107; Piece: 205; Book: 7; Civil Parish: Pilton; County: Devon; Enumeration District: 2; Folio: 11; Page: 16; Line: 7;
Is he this person, the son of John Warren, a Paper Maker at Playford Mill in Pilton, & Mary?
John Warren 35

John Warren 10
Edwin Warren 8
Jane Warren 6
Philip Warren 2
Henry Warren 9 Mo
Unfortunately I haven't been able to find a baptism for William or a marriage to Susan in the Devon registers on Findmypast.

From FREEbmd this may be William and Susan's marriage:
Marriages Dec 1849
Warren William Newton Abbot 10 205
Deamond Susan Newton Abbot 10 205

You may need to purchase the certificate from http://www.gro.gov.uk to be sure of their parents.
(Apologies - just realised I gave a wrong url for the gro. have corrected it)

Thank you that's interesting . The John Warren paper maker is a very real possibility as would make Williams birth about 1837 which would be about right.
Think I should send for the certificate and hopefully will give me parents names.
Thank you again

I live in Devon. West Ogwell and Abbotskerswell are both just outside of Newton Abbot. Pilton is in North Devon (near Barnstaple) so try looking at the North Devon Family History Society records.

The Paper Mill at Playford was burnt to the ground in 1847 which would explain why the family moved to South Devon.

That's great information about the paperwork's burning down.
I sent for the marriage certificate so hopefully it won't take too long
Thank-you both again

I know that the parish records for Pilton Church, North Devon are available to view on Findmypast as I have quite a lot of family members from there. Unfortunately, I am not currently in a position to look them up for you, but maybe someone else on the Forum is.

Today I received the marriage certificate for William Warren and Susan Deamond dated 24 December 1849. William was aged 22 and his father is Henry Warren.I just don't seem to be able to find a William born about that time with a father named Henry.
This of course ruled out his parents being the John and Mary mentioned in the census previously posted. The names and age both being wrong.
It anyone can help I would be most grateful.
Thank-you
