Gage family

Postby SarahW88 » Sun Sep 25, 2016 7:21 pm

Can any answer my question?
There is a family story that my grandmother's family are fair ground workers but I've not come across anything yet. Other than the national fairground archives ( nothing found yet) where can I look to see if this true?
My grandmother was called Evelyn Primrose Gage born 1912 in Newport South Wales ( DOB is only ruff)
Please can someone help?
Thanks

Hi
Is this her birth?
June 1912 Cardiff 11a 730
Gage, Eveline P.
mother's maiden surname - Scammell

If so, parents seem to be Frederick Gage and Julia Scammell (previously married to a Llewellyn)
They are in Treharris Street, Roath, in 1911, living with Julia's mother Ellen Scammell
Frederick Gage, born Pontypool, is a Dock Labourer in 1911.
But going back to the 1891 census, he seems to be an Amusement Assistant. Living with his brother John Gage, who was an Amusement Proprietor (Christchurch with Caerleon ultra Pontem, piece 4368 folio 88 page 49)

Let's hope someone has some suggestions for further research.
Ian

Hi
John features a few times in the papers.
http://newspapers.library.wales/

The Glamorgan Gazette, 24th August 1894
ASSAULTING A LLANTWIT SHOWMAN.
INTERFERING WITH THE POLICE.

At the Cowbridge county police-court on Tuesday Alfred Chatterton of Llantwit Major, was summoned by John Gage, a 'show' proprietor for an assault on Tuesday, the 7th inst.
Complainant had occasion to order a lad off the show-field when defendant interfered and struck him in the face.
The Bench fined defendant 6s and costs.

In connection with the same case, Wm. George, Llantwit Major, was summoned for interfering with the police. While Police-constable Page was separating the defendant in the previous case George came up and interfered and said the constable had no right to interfere with them. John Gage corroborated, and defendant was convicted and fined £2 and costs.
