Online: Monthly Army Lists 1914-1919/Limited WW2/1880s

Postby MaureenE » Sun Sep 18, 2016 1:21 am

Monthly Army Lists have recently been released by the National Library of Scotland, for the period
1914-1919 and 1937-1940

At least during WW1, temporary and territorial officers only appeared in the Monthly Army Lists

There is a Search facility, and Lists may be read online, or downloaded.

Thanks for that. I usually use ARCHIVE.ORG for the lists - I think their copies come from NLS - but that is a pain to find volumes in, as the cataloguing seems inconsistent. The NLS link you have provided will go "up" to what appears to be a list of stuff that's in much better order. Though the NLS files are not as easy to flip through the pages, in my opinion.

Thank you, thank you!

I found my grandfather in April 1916 at the first attempt - and, although laborious, I will check other months to fill in the details between his joining the King's Lancashires from his university OTC in 1915 to his resignation to join the RAF in 1918. The landmarks are in the London Gazette, but I know that he was shifted from one battalion to another as the regiment merged with the Manchesters, and consolidated. So this source, which I did not know about until now, is a terrific help.

The Monthly Army List was an official War Office publication, which commenced August 1881 and ceased after May 1940. (No issues published for Dec. 1897 and Jan. 1898). Based on library catalogues, Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford, and the National Library of Scotland may have the best collections.

At least during the First World War, only the Monthly Lists cover the officers in “battalion order”, but this listing probably appeared in earlier publications also.

Online editions for the 1880s:
Monthly Army List, editions from September 1881 to December 1885 ... h014400656
Digital Collection, Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford.
Most digital files appear to contain two monthly Lists. Personal experience was that a file was slow to download. Note these are copies of Google Book files, so those in North America etc may be able to find the Google Books file, and read online and search.

The above information has been added to the FIBIS Fibiwiki page Military periodicals online, section Monthly Army List ... _Army_List

Title of this topic has been edited to include 1880s.
