Help... Elizabeth Rawes - Abt.1765 - Coventry

Postby rfitzgerald1963 » Wed Sep 14, 2016 6:00 am

Elizabeth Rawes married George Parker in St Michael's Coventry in 1786, the bond states she is over 21 so this would make her DOB before 1765, I have found her possible parents, John & Sarah Rawes who married in 1755 at St Michael's Coventry, Children who's Baptism's i have found are

James Rawes - Baptised 30 Dec 1759

Gerrard Rawes - Baptised 13 May 1761

John Rawes - Baptised 14 May 1765

and I have also found the marriage bond of Gerrard but i can't find a birth or baptism record for Elizabeth, how likely is it that there was another family in the area called Rawes at this time is seems to be a bit of an unusual name, and why can't i find the baptism for Elizabeth??

Can anyone help??

Re the likelihood of another Rawes family - you have to look at the PRs for Coventry and surrounding parishes and see if there are any other people with that name over (say) 40 or 50 years. Also any other sources such as wills, burgess rolls, apprentice records....

England Births and Christenings
Name: Elizabeth Raws
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 28 July 1758
Christening Place: Saint John, Coventry, Wawick
Father's Name: John Raws
Mother's Name: Sarah

There's a Rawes one name study, and website
http://www.rawes.co.uk/

I think I made an error re the baptism date of William Henry Parker in Lambeth. I will correct it.

brilliant thanks again Ianbee, i looked all over but could not find this, that i think makes the link right and takes me back another generation :D

shame that the marriage bond for George does not mention occupation or anything as not sure how to track his parents. and i still need to confirm that George & Elizabeth are the right parents of my James Rawes in London but can't seem to make this solid link....

In terms of other children, potential siblings of Elizabeth who might appear as witnesses, etc., I'd guess there's 1 more between her parents' marriage and her baptism plus another about 1763 between the latter 2 baptisms you found. May not be helpful but on several occasions, siblings provide the key to tracing an ancestor.

Have corrected my mis-info on Wm Henry Parker, baptized Lambeth, 1817 (not 1819). So, as you rightly said, that workhouse baptism in 1817 has no connection.
However, sensational news! You may not after all be descended from said William Henry bap 1817! See other thread.
