Where did they go? Can anyone help?

Postby mjcosj » Sun Sep 11, 2016 12:24 pm

My wife and I are researching Matilda Simpson and family from the earl 1800’s
Matilda unknown is 44 years of age in the 1861 census and a widow, born in Birmingham, Warwickshire. She is living in 74, Gates Street, Wolverhampton, Staffs with her three daughters
Barbara Simpson aged 19 years given as born in Birmingham about 1842
Fanny Simpson aged 17 years given as born in Birmingham about 1844
Matilda Simpson aged 12 years given as born in Birmingham about 1849
Despite thorough research I cannot find a record of birth for Matilda unknown or any of
Matilda’s children.
I cannot find a marriage record between William Simpson and Matilda unknown
between the years 1835 and 1850 that would explain where William Simpson originates from.
Fanny Simpson marries in Ancoats Manchester and gives her fathers occupation as that of a farmer.
I appear to have hit a brick wall; Can anyone please suggest an avenue to research?
Many thanks
Mike and Linda

Have you located the family in the 1851 census? Interestingly, girls all matching the first names and ages of the Simpson daughters appear in the following census record:

1851 - Aston Manor, Warwickshire
Elizah Middleton, age 57, born Leicstershire 1794
Elizabeth Middleton, age 55, born Leicestershire 1796
Thomas Taylor, age 18, born Birmingham 1833
Barbara Williams, age 9, born Birmingham 1842 (described as "nurse child")
Fanny Williams, age 7, born 1844 Birmingham ("nurse child")
Matilda Williams, age 2, born 1849 Birmingham ("nurse child")
Sarah Jones, age 9 months, born 1850 Birmingham ("nurse child")

Piece 2062, Folio 127, Page 10

It may explain why you have been unable to find birth records for the Simpson girls.

Just tried to find birth registrations for those 3 Williams children - only used FreeBMD - but the only one identified as born in Birmingham is:
Births Mar 1849 Williams Matilda Birmingham 16 355
It might be worth getting her birth certificate to see who her parents were.

There is a marriage of a Matilda Williams in Birmingham in 1852, but not to Mr Simpson:
Marriages Mar 1852
Bloxham Richard Birmingham 6d 91 or
Swain John Birmingham 6d 91 to
Williams Matilda Birmingham 6d 91

and another one in 1855:
Marriages Jun 1855
Cox William Birmingham 6d 37
TAYLOR Henry Birmingham 6d 37
WILLIAMS Matilda Birmingham 6d 37

and in 1857:
Marriages Jun 1857
Cheatham Frederick Birmingham 6d 1
Clements James Moore Birmingham 6d 1
Williams Matilda Birmingham 6d 1

Of course, none of these may be her, and even if one does relate then that husband could have died and she then remarried under yet another name.

Movidger, Sylec; Thank you guys for your diligent efforts. I tried the 1851 census but of course I was starting with Matilda senior and basing the daughters statement on her marriage cert as dad being William I got nowhere. I can now send for a birth cert and get more concrete evidence. Many many thanks. Mike and Linda :D

Hi
It seems Barbara is visiting a Adam Simpson born 1836 in Ireland at Burton on Trent in 1871.
Adam's marriage 25.5.1868 to Annie Hardy at Barton under Needwood gave an address of Dunstall near Wolverhampton ,occupation steward and father Archibald Simpson steward .
Could that be a clue?

Hi ciderdrinker
I saw Barbara visiting the Simpsons In Dunstall near Burton on trent as a single lady. She is earlier listed as a school mistress in Wolverhampton but I am awaitingMatilda, her sister's b cert to be sure of her father.
Thank you for picking that point up again for me. I will examine thins a little deeper now.
kind regards

Hello
That's lovely.
But before you go looking for the Williams can I mention Matilda's remarriage 28.6.1875 at St Martins Bradley
Samuel Slater 61 widow cordwainer Bilston Amos Slater
Matilda Simpson 59 widow Bilston St William Such jewellry
wit John Matthews (daughter Matilda's husband) and Sarah Ann Jones

Matilda Bloomer Such was baptised at St Phillips and St Martins Birmingham to William and Matilda Such jewller and golden seal maker.
born 17.11.1815 bapr 31,5,1815 St Phillps address Mont Row and 15.12.1815 St Martins

She's on the 1851 census with her family at Bloomsbury but not the children.
William Such 68 widower agent Birmingham
Matilda B 34 Proffesor of Music Birmingham
Emma millner 28

But the children are hers because the baptisms match.
Barbara Such born 2.7.1841 bapt 20.6.1842 single woman Kings Norton at St Martins
Fanny Such 1.4.1844 d of Matilda Bloomer Such at St Georges
Matilda Such 7.2.1849 St Martins d of William and Matilda commercial traveler Gt Charles St private baptism.

Sorry if that complicates anything. But otherwise you could spend a long time looking for a Matilda Williams marrying a William Williams and getting nowhere.

Hope you're not too mad
