Canadian / British Family Member dead-end!

Postby Urchin » Thu Sep 08, 2016 3:12 pm

I've reached quite a dead-end regarding one of my family members. I know there has to be something, somewhere, but I am not sure where to turn next. If any of you have suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.

The person I am researching is Charles Alfred Maguire (1884-1976)

Here is what I know:
He was born in England. One source says London.
I have two different birth dates. On his death certificate it says 22 Mar 1884
On his Canadian Attestation papers it says Oct 7, 1888.
He married his wife, Mary Jane Magee in Jan 22, 1908
The Marriage Cert says that Charles' name is "Charles ARTHUR Maguire" but everything I have says Charles Alfred.
His father is also listed as "Charles Arthur Maguire" on the Marriage cert.
He immigrated to Canada in 1911.
He had 4 children (and a stillbirth) - Helena, Stanley, William and Eric.
I know that he traveled with the Forces often. Stanley was born in Bermuda.
He died in Ontario, Canada on Feb 28, 1976

Documents that I have obtained:
Marriage certificate
Death Certificate
Canadian Army Attestation Paper

I cannot figure out who his parents are. The Marriage cert says his Dad was Charles Alfred, but I am not sure I count it as accurate. I wish I could but I have nothing else. On the death cert, it says: "Father: Unknown Maguire." "Mother: Unknown Birmingham"

Any suggestions? I have attached some docs and a photo of him.

Hi, there is a birth registered for Charles Alfred Maguire in Wandsworth, in London December quarter 1884. Vol. 1d Page 634.
Maybe worth getting to see his father's name and if his mother's surname was Birmingham?
Good luck

You've got 2 or 3 UK censuses to look through for a start. You could look for a son with a father's name set to the name(s) you have. Your problem, of course, will be recognising him if you see him.

The mother's surname might be Buckingham?
In 1891 Charles A Macguire, 6, is at the Central London District School in Hanwell, Middlesex.
Also there was a Maria Macguire, 13. Who I think is his sister. Says both born Surrey St Georges.

However in the 1881 census -
7 Knowsley Road, Battersea (Wandsworth RD)
Richard Macguire Head 25 Printer
Maria Macguire Wife 24
Richard Macguire 5
Maria Macguire 3 Battersea
William Macguire 2
Father Richard born Wandsworth, the others Battersea

Marriage appears to be
June 1875 Wandsworth 1d 742
Buckingham, Maria Hobbs
Macquire, Richard James T

Children were admitted to Newington workhouse, 21 August 1890
Macguire Richard b 1877
- Maria 1878
George 1884
Charles 1885
Discharged To Father, 23 August 1890

Then admitted St George's Workhouse, 23 August! William now admitted but not George.
McGuire Richard (born) 26.4.76
- Maria 20.5.77
William 1881
Charles 1884
admitted from St Georges
Discharged to Newington Workhouse, 25 August 1890

Discharged from Newington Workhouse, 4 September 1890
McGuire, Maria
Mc Guire, Charles
Both to Hanwell
William discharged same day to Champion Hill, Richard discharged on the 5th.

You folks are absolutely amazing! I will go through all of this information when my little one naps and see if it adds up to what I have.
Perhaps there is an error on the Wedding Certificate of Mary Jane Magee and Charles Alfred Maguire when the father and son's name are the same (or maybe it's the wrong people, but based on names, I am quite certain it is right)

It's so sad to see the children in and out of workhouses. What would have led to this?
