Barbara Gourley/Gourlay

Postby janmlawson » Fri Aug 26, 2016 11:39 am

Barbara was born on 14 August 1849 in Upperby, Cumberland. She died before Jul 1882 because there was a probate decision in that month. I have found her on the census but I wonder if anyone could find her death registration as I have tried and failed. Thanks.

The probate record is from the 1890 Calendar.
Gourlay Barbara
Personal Estate £60 1s. 8d.
14 June.
Administration of the Personal Estate of Barbara Gourlay late of Belle Vue near Carlisle in the County of Cumberland Spinster who died in or since July 1882 at ----------- was granted at Carlisle to Margaret Charley (Wife of Robert Charley) of 8 Wood-street -court in the City of Carlisle the Sister and one of the Next of Kin.

Suggests that Barbara hadn't been heard of since July 1882? No known place of death?

It's as if she just disappeared. Would she have had to be presumed dead for 7 years to have her estate probated? Which would make her death in 1875. It's a mystery.

Hi
It seems likely to me that something of the sort happened. That Barbara was legally declared as presumed dead.
But the probate was in 1890, I am guessing that July 1882 might be when they last had word of her. But I don't know that. They were looking for her via those newspaper notices in 1883.
Of course whether she really was dead or not is the intriguing question!
