Looking for descendants of Private A.S. Manners

Postby JaneyH » Sun Aug 21, 2016 8:03 am

There's an article in my local paper telling the story of a Private Alfred Sidney Manners, No. 72279, 134th Field Ambulance during WW1. A Bible owned by this soldier was found at Thiepval Wood in September 1916 and kept by another soldier for safe-keeping. The current owner of the Bible (grandson of the soldier who found it) is looking to reunite it with a descendant of Private Manners and has appealed for the public to help.

The full story is here: http://www.kentlive.news/continuing-sea ... story.html and this includes the relevant contact details. Please don't contact me - I'm just sharing the story with an audience who may be able to help.

Delightful read......I hope there is a happy ending. I have no doubt the search will be taken up on here.

Hi All,

On his Attestation papers he gives his next of kin as his mother Jane Manners, address - 118 Southcroft Road, Tooting. On the 1901 & 1911 census he is living with his parents (Alfred Edward & Jane Manners) and one sibling John Edward Manners (born 1900, 10 months old on 1901 census). His father appears to have been a policeman.

I think he is also on the 1939 Register
Alfred S Manners dob 18/8/1898 Hospital Porter
Harriet, wife dob 15/1/1894
Alfred E, son dob 5/11/1924 Garage hand
+ five closed entries
address 123 Castlecombe Rd Chiselhurst and Sidcup kent

Alfreds christening took place in September 1898 so I think this is him.

I do not have the time to look further as I am away but with presumably six children there are still descendants around. Hope someone can carry on the research.
