Nursing records c1930

Postby gardener48 » Sat Aug 20, 2016 2:03 pm

My husband's aunt Lizzie Devlin was born in Loughbrickland Co.Down in1907. We know she moved to England and became a nurse. She married in 1934 to Sydney Tout and is named as Patricia Elizabeth Devlin on the marriage records and also the nursing records. Ancestry's UK &Ireland Nursing Registers show her in Exminster in 1949, snd quotes qualification as R.M.P.A.Cert. 1931.
Does anyone know if there are any records available which will enable us to pinpoint where and when she began nursing?

If her qualification is an RMPA certificate - then she must have started nursing in time to train and qualify for this. However - I had to look this up, and it may be specialised - Royal Medico-Psychological Association! The Royal prefix came about in 1926, so she can't have started training earlier than this. Read about the RMPA here http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14723636.

Exminster may suggest Devon County Asylum (later Devon Mental Hospital, also Exe Vale Hospital and Exminster Hospital).

See the hospital records database for details of surviving records which may include staff records for the period you want.

I've done some research on the Devon County Mental Hospital at Exminster since my great-grandmother was a patient there from 1938 until her death in 1952.

There is a project based at Exeter University looking into the hospital, and they have published a lot of their work here: http://dcmh.exeter.ac.uk/ They are keen to hear from anyone with links to the institution, either as patients or staff, and contact details are included.

I got in touch with the lead researcher to see if records relating to my great-grandmother still existed anywhere, and it turns out they are held at the Devon Heritage Centre in Exeter, the website for which is: http://www.devon.gov.uk/record_office.htm. However, given that I'm in Kent I haven't yet had the opportunity to visit and inspect the records, and I'm more than a bit hesitant given what they might say.

The hospital site has now been converted into residential apartments, and is known as Devington Park. This website: http://www.devingtonpark.com/history.html also provides a history which you may find interesting. If you explore other parts of the website you will find photos of what it looks like today.

Thanks Peter Kent and JaneyH. I shall investigate those links. This afternoon I discovered that Lizzie's husband Sidney Tout was also a Mental nurse at the same hospital. That did not even occur to me.
Thanks again for your help.

From the dates, it it sounds like your husband's aunt could have worked there at the same time as my great-grandmother was a patient!

She is in the 1911 Ireland Census on FMP. Father is James Hugh Devlin born 1881 County Down, mother is Bridget Devlin born 1877 England, grandmother is Anne Burns born 1841 County Armagh.

On the 1939 register Patricia E Tout (Unpaid Domestic Duties) is living with Sidney J Tout (a Male Nurse) at Headon House, Headon Gardens , St Thomas R.D., Devon.
