Servant Brewer

Postby ollyB » Fri Aug 19, 2016 3:28 pm

My g.grandfather was listed as a Servant Brewer in the 1841 census. Does anyone know what this is? He was living in Devizes at the time where there was a brewery.

Re above Servant Brewer. I need to get my facts straight! It was the 1871 census and he was living in Bethnal Green!

My guess is that the household had its own brewery, and your g'father was employed as a servant whose job was to run the brewery. Job descriptions in censuses are often stated like that, such as 'Servant Cook' rather than just 'Cook', it depended on how the head of house regarded his staff I suppose.

What is the census reference, please?

To give a helpful answer, we need to be able to look at the actual entry.
