Soldier's Regiment

How was a soldier's regiment chosen when they joined the army? One of my ancestors was from Shropshire and joined the army in 1839. He was in the 90th Light Infantry which was a Scottish regiment.

I googled your query and found an article about recruitment back then. The different regiments were responsible for their own recruitment so would set up recruitment drives wherever they might be able to encourage individuals, often the poorest members of society, to enlist. Presumably, the Highland Regiment did just that wherever they wanted, not necessarily in Scotland. It wasn't until the 1WW and conscription, I think, when one's skills or occupation became important issues for deciding where individuals were placed.
