Proably a very stupid question

Postby mikeyw » Sun May 04, 2008 6:50 pm

I have ony just started trying to trace my tree so am still finding my feet. So apologies if this is a very simple stupid q?

I think I have found my grandmother, I knew the date she was born was April 1918 but on the record it said registered Jun 1918? Could it be possible for someone to be born in April but not registered until jun?

Many thanks

Hi Mike,

Registrations are divided up into quarters. So January February and March births come under March Quarter.
April May and June come under June Quarter, July August and September come under September Quarter and October November and December come under December Quarter.

Someone born on Dec 31st 1908 would be registered under March 1909 Quarter so it pays not to be too definite in your searches sometimes.

No question is stupid. If people don't ask they don't learn, so if you have any further queries - ask away! [:)] Hope this helps.

I think parents have a certain time limit to register a birth. Can't remember what the time limit is off hand but it wouldn't have been unusual to be born in April and registered in June.

Nowadays you are given 42 days to register a birth but don't know what the time limit was in 1918. It may have been the same or longer.
