I am hoping someone can help me with some research into an ancestor who was in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. I would love to find out more about him and his time in the RAF.
Leonard Clarke Race
Son of Clive and Caroline Mary Race, husband of Evelyn Myra, of Scarborough
Born: 1912
Died: 29 Oct 1942
His name appears on the CWGC website and it gives this further info:
1378789, 224 Sqdn Sergeant
His name is on the Glasgow Crematorium war memorial.
It would be great to find out more about what happened to him, this is the first RAF ancestor I have in the tree, and so I am not sure how or where to learn more about him.
Any help would be much appreciated.

You could contact the RAF Museum and archive at Hendon, Middlesex. They would give you advice on how to proceed and/or let you know whether they have any useful info. I have found them very helpful. If you are close enough to visit, it is best to make an appointment as the visitors' research space is quite small.
The website is rafmuseum.org.uk or e-mail to
research@rafmuseum.org or tel: 020 8358 4873.

Bear in mind that his full papers will be with the MoD. However, there does appear to be lots of extra stuff for RAF guys where there is a good story to tell. Pot luck. Always try Google....

Pop along to the National Archives and look through the RAF operational records.
For example
