Help with dating photo

Postby ksouthall » Wed Mar 30, 2016 10:09 pm

Dear All,

I have been trying to date the attached photo of the man in the right of the double image. The back of the carte de visite is also attached although it is a bit blurry. Unfortunately I don't have the original so can't currently retake the photo of the back.

I was wondering if anyone has any similar photos with an approximate date please. At the moment, I have narrowed it down to between the early 1880s and about 1911 - quite a big window of opportunity!

Any suggestions welcomed.

Thanks....

Katherine - may or may not be much help, but here is bio for photographer: http://www.hertfordshire-genealogy.co.uk/data/postcards/publisher-moulden.htm
Seems that his dates were 1861-1916 and his photo studio thought to date from 1886.

Thanks Sylvia. Henry Moulden was a photographer in Biggin Lane in the 1881 Census and it looks like his business had moved premises to 27a High Street by 1912.

I have found a CDV with a similar back dated approximately 1879-1881 on this link:

I wasn't sure what era the sitter's clothes are from.

Typically, I've also just found another similar back dated about 1879 - 1883 on:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.anc ... eping.html

I am hoping someone else has an H. G. Moulden CDV with the same back and reads this post and has a better idea of when H. G. Moulden used this style o the back of his CDVs. I don't have any others by him plus it's earlier than I was expecting so it may not be the person I thought it was in the photo.

According to Roger Vaughan's website, the 'Bamboo and Square' design was used from about 1888 - 1889 and the 'Bamboo and Fan' design was used any time between 1884 and about 1892: http://www.rogerco.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/time/back85.htm

Moulden appears to have used both of these designs at some point (re the Hertfordshire Genealogy link provided by Sylvia) so I don't know if the ivy back in my photo is before or after that time. I suspect the photo is of one of the following:

John Blowey Davis (1857 - 1921)
Philip George Davis (1859 - 1893)
Thomas Blowey (1859 - 1919)
