Royal Navy-HMS Swiftsure Feb. 9, 1889-where was she?

Postby winstonsmother » Sun Mar 27, 2016 10:57 pm

Our ancestor Thomas James Masters was posted to this ship on 7th December 1888 and he continued to serve as a B1C on board HMS Swiftsure until 9th February 1889 at which point he was listed as R.Q.

We know a home station for HMS Swiftsure was in Esquimalt, British Columbia, Canada
We also know HMS Swiftsure was in Mexico on Xmas day 1888.-- from newspaper article. .
and we know this ship was headed for Panama in the middle of January 1889 aprox., from another newspaper article -

What we would like to know is where HMS Swiftsure was when B1C Thomas James Masters is noted as RQ.
We are only 3 weeks and a bit away from finding where Thomas became RQ
We do not have any other information about Thomas on either ship that he served on.

Does anyone have access to these types of records?
Is there a place where we can search Royal Navy records to find this answer? We do not mind "sleuthing"
After Feb 1889 there have been no records for Thomas James Masters found in UK, or Canada or elsewhere-- He just vanished---
Most of his family stayed in England. Two of his brothers came to Vancouver Island ,British Columbia and lived in the Campbell River and Victoria area. There is no record of Thomas being on Vancouver Island that we can find, or anywhere in BC.

Finding where he is noted as being RQ would be a huge help.

We are hopeful that someone here can help us solve this mystery.

If you've been looking at the newspapers then you would have read
MOVEMENTS OF H.M. SHIPS
Pacific Station. Letters from Commander in Chief dated at Callao 8th February. Swiftsure at
Callao 8th February; leaves 11th February in execution of programme.
Hampshire Telegraph, Saturday 30 March, 1889

We would like to say thank you to all who have taken time to read our request for assistance and to those who found answers to our "mystery.

Learning now that Thomas James Masters left his ship in Peru, and did not return before the ship sailed on Feb 11, 1889, and as there does not appear to be any other concrete evidence for him anywhere we have searched throughout the world, we are going to put him to rest at this moment.

many thanks again :)
from the Masters family in British Columbia Canada and myself.
