Marshall brothers from Great Yarmouth

Postby midshipman » Tue Mar 22, 2016 6:35 pm

I have been trying to discover what happened to 2 brothers. Isaac Ernest Marshall was born in 1871 in Great Yarmouth and Charles Edward Marshall was born in 1876 in Great Yarmouth.
(They had a brother who died in about 1906 in the Royal Navy).
I suspected they might of participated in the Boer War as there appears to be an Isaac Ernest Marshall involved.
I have not found any marriage or death data for either brother and wondered if any member could please help or advise.

Many thanks for your input.
There is also a Charles Edward Marshall, Trooper 34970 8th company, 4th Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry.
Although I am presently unable to be certain these 2 soldiers are my 2 brothers.

If you have not found an evidence of marriage or death for either brother, might they have emigrated? Many people were emigrating during the second half of the 19th century up to the outbreak of the 1WW. I have found several single young men in my family that did just that - going to Canada and South Africa in particular.

I've had another think about the brothers. Where have you looked for possible marriages for them? I have spotted two possibilities using freebmd.org.uk and familysearch.org.
Ernest George Isaac Marshall married an Alice Elizabeth Shreeve 22.12.1896 Yarmouth, Norfolk
Charles Edward Marshall married Hazel Minnie Blaxall 11.06.1916 Attleborough, Norfolk
These may not be your family and you may have discounted them but if not, worth further investigation.

Many thanks brunes08 for your messages and advice. Ernest George Isaac Marshall not one of the brothers, already checked hum out. Will check Charles Edward Marshall's marriage in 1916. Been trawling through Boer War casualty sites and suspect both brothers either killed or wounded in the war.

I've found some personal details on enlistment papers for Isaac Ernest Marshall, Imperial Yeomanry No 38661, which might help you decide if he's yours.
Dated Jan 1st 1901. Isaac Ernest Marshall, engineer, 270 Southdown, Great Yarmouth. Apprenticed for 6 years to Mr Leprand (? not sure of this name; bit of a scribble) 5 ft 5 ins, 121 lbs, chest 33, fresh complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, C of E. Enlistment into Imperial Yeomanry at London. Next of kin, mother, Mrs Marshall c/o Coat and Son, South Key, Great Yarmouth. Served South Africa. Many thanks for your information. So much is similar to what I know of Isaac Ernest Marshall but his mother Esther died in 1899. Going to recheck the whole branch of my family tree.

Just following up on that... I notice that this guy (Isaac Ernest Marshall) was discharged at Stellenbosch, intended place of residence Cape Town.
