CEF..

Postby paulbshaw » Wed Mar 02, 2016 1:14 pm

Hi all, my G Grandad served in the Essex reg before WW1. He left in 1905 next he is in the CEF in Canada joining for WW1. What is perplexing me is why he is in Canada.. was there any advantage to be in the Canadian army? Or was there some sort of incentive to go to Canada back then as with Australia later. Any suggestions welcome

Had he emigrated to Canada? A lot of ex pats joined the Canadians, Aussies and New Zelanders at the outbreak of the War.

Have you got his name, service number and regiment?

Hi Paul.

I posted a similar query on 19 December 15 ( headed George Ralph Singleton) and had some really helpful replies from Colin and Nicola.
It's probably easier for you to read through that post and try the link mentioned by Colin.

I hope that's useful

I'm not sure if there was an incentive to encourage young people to go to Canada at that time but there could have been. All I know is that I have found several family members going to Canada, the United States or South Africa between 1900 and about 1910. Some returned to the UK just before the 1WW, others stayed.
