Questions
Who is supposed to have had Scottish parents? You say William, and then you say John.
John Barresford, or Beresford, was born circa 1816 in France, his father William was in the army, an army muster says William was born in Houghton le Spring.
When and where did William marry, who to? When did he die?
How did you get to William Barrowfoot bap. 1796 in Bishop MIddleham?

Hi been a while since I have been on here, and I wanted to thank you for your reply, I thought you got emails when people replied and when I heard nothing I gave up.
To clarify, I had the info you mentioned, and think I may have mislead what I believed.
I am trying to find the baptism for William Barrowfoot(Beresford) born Houghton le Spring c,1793, some census say Scotland, Durham.
I found a William Barrowfoot married to Elizabeth Ratcliffe 1812 at Newcastle
Yes his Army details said he was born at Houghton le Spring, but so far not found a baptism.

His son John who was born in France and who died in Gaol --- obit said he had Scottish parents(William &Elizabeth) so where did that info come from?
William place of birth varied on every census, his last census 1871 was at Tantobie Durham, where he died.

I have no father for William on his marriage, His army details are inconclusive, the baptism on Family Search for William Barrowfoot give his parents as John & Jane at Bishop Middleham Durham, but I have not found any more children for "John Jane" or a marriage for them.

I hope this makes sense, I can see how it may be confusing so I apologise if this is so.

Thanks

Yes, but there's a burial at Bishop Middleham, 31 January 1816
William Barrowfoot
abode Cornforth
age 20 years

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1 ... at=1827361

Cornforth was a township in the parish of Bishop Middleham.
So it seems to firmly rule out the 1796 Barrowfoot one.

Hope someone will be able to help you with this.
The newspaper article was in the Shields Daily News,11 June 1885, and described John Barrasford as a native of Paris, but of Scottish parentage.
John Barrasford seems to have had a wife Jane, and they are found easily enough in the census in Washington, Durham, in 1861, and in Heworth in 1871.
But is there a marriage for them?
