The only thing I can see close to Buxton, is a Thomas Smith died 1949, Chapel-en-le-Frith. Has his birth year as 1877, but it wasn't uncommon for relatives not to know the age of a deceased relative. There are other possibilities, but nothing particularly close to Buxton.
He does appear to be on the 1939 register on FMP. Assuming it's him, the preview shows him in Buxton with a Charles Mycock and 1 other person.

You say Thomas was born in Buxton, but you don't say if he was still living there around 1947. If he was, the entry found by ianw16 is worth considering, and he's right that stated age at death should be treated with caution, as the informant may have guessed at it. If you want to risk a tenner on sending for the death certificate, the full GRO reference is SeptQ 1949, Thomas Smith, Chapel-le-F 10a 602
(Chapel en le Frith is the registration district covering Buxton.)
