Occupation from photo?

Postby Urchin » Thu Nov 26, 2015 7:15 pm

Attached is a photo of my great, great grandmother, Blanche Cann. The photo is from around 1908, taken in England (either Devon or York, not sure where she was at that time).
She is in her mid twenties in this photo.

Her clothes make me wonder if she is wearing some type of uniform, rather than daily dress? Can anyone tell me more from what they see in this photo? Possible occupation? Status? This photo was actually the reverse side of a postcard she had sent to her sister.

Thank you in advance!

I cant seem to make out what is on her tie. I have never heard of her being a nurse (but that doesn't mean it didn't happen). From some census records that I have found in her earlier years, she worked as a domestic servant in a rectory...but the uniform doesn't seem to fit that occupation.

She was, however, a children's nurse living in with a family and on looking up my photo she was also wearing a Nursing bonnet.cap and full white apron so I could be completely wrong about your gg grandmother.

I think she was in service in some capacity so other options might be governess or school mistress. Have you searched for her in the 1911 census?

In 1911 her working days were over. From 1901 to 1911, she went from being a rectory servant in Devon and being a self-proclaimed "old maid" at the time of this photo, to suddenly being married in 1909 in Yorkshire and having a baby in 1910.

Found this pic on google and she's dressed like the lady in your photo....she's a maid.

I googled: 'maids uniforms from the early 20th century'.

That is fantastic! It looks like the exact same outfit! I wish I could find more on exactly where these women worked, since their uniform seems quite unique!

Thank you muchly!
