Medal Entitlement

Postby TradeyBear » Wed Nov 25, 2015 4:04 pm

Hi All,

I need some help deciphering the medal entitlement on my granddad’s service record.... I see that he was awarded the 1939-45 War Medal, the Defence Medal, the Africa Star with 8th Army clasp but a bit confused whether he got the 1939-45 Star and the Italy Star or just the Italy Star??!

Many thanks

I know virtually nothing about WW2 campaign medals so this may be a case of fools rushing in after reading some reference material....

So far as I can see from the 1939-45 Star info on Forces War Records, https://www.forces-war-records.co.uk/medals/1939-45-star/, anyone with the Italy Star would get a 1939-45 Star pretty much automatically (the only way I can see that he wouldn't have got the 1939-45 Star would be if his total overseas service during the war was less than 6 months - which, since he got both the Italy and Africa Stars seems unlikely).

Apparently there was a limit of 5 Stars issued per person, so I believe that your GF's entitlement was:
  • Africa Star with 8th Army Clasp (as per line 1);
  • War Medal 1939-45 (as per line 2) - this was a round one, not a star;
  • Defence Medal (line 3) - again, a round one, not a star;
  • 1939-45 Star (line 4);
  • Italy Star (line 4);
Five medals in total, three of them Stars (and presumably none of them stamped with his name, which annoys me no end).

Anyone who sees a hole in my logic, please shout!!!
Adrian

Hi Adrian,

Your logic makes perfect sense to me. I just wasn’t sure and so wanted to get opinions from others.

I share your annoyance!

Thanks for replying and for your help

"Stars" is in the plural which is another clue ;)

Thanks Peter,

I thought it said ‘Stars” too but wasn’t sure if that’s what it said or what I wanted it so say!

For months I thought the surname on a birth cert I had ordered said ‘Starden’ until I realised the St was actually a H and it was Harden! :roll:
