Brig o Doon photopraphs (MACK AYR)

Postby JPM90 » Thu Nov 12, 2015 12:13 pm

Hello,
I believe this is a photo of my ancestor taken at the brig o doon. Helpfull they havent labelled the photo so I can't 100% indentify them. However on the back of the card the name of the photopgrapher Mack, Artist, Ayr appears. Where would anyone advise I go from here?

There is a compilation of directory entries for the 19th century on this site:
http://www.ayrshirehistory.org.uk/Photo ... phers2.htm
including a Mack based in Kilmarnock which i think is not far from Ayr. Local historical trade directories might be able to confirm when such a photographer was in business which would narrow the date and could support or reject the idea of who the subject is.
I can say it is post 1908 due to the wording on the back of the postcard

Thanks very much! I saw the link before but apart from the name I couldn't get much further. I;ll check the trade directory!
Thanks

I have also checked to see if the printing in the stamp box could help but the Playle website has the most comprehensive details on dating postcards by stamp box and sadly they have no suggested dates! (http://www.playle.com/realphoto/photok.php)

However, the National Library of Scotland has many trade and street directories. The following site contains Scottish Post Office Directories til 1911
http://digital.nls.uk/directories/index.html
The Ayrshire archives might also be able to give you information on the photographer

Hope that helps
