Photo Age?

Postby RichardJohnston » Mon Oct 26, 2015 9:39 pm

Found the attached photo last weekend In a trunk of papers that belonged to my great grand father and I am now wondering whether this was his father. If anyone could help me date this - this would help no end. Also a good guess at his age too? The photo was almost unrecognizable as a photo as it was in a lovely little leather box, which at first I thought was a mirror box (about 2 inches square) but suddenly if I tilted it at an angle the image appeared. Looks like the image is directly processed on to copper. Any thoughts? Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks

Clearly the photo is old. I have just googled 'Victorian photo printing techniques'. A lot of sites related to early photography come up that might be of help.

I suspect it is a 'tintype' photo - a technique common in the 1860s and 1870s.

btw: I love the man's waistcoat!

Hi there

You might also try using the Victoria and Museum website to find a similar costume and search something along the line of "Fashion 1870 men's clothes" and change the decade until you find the correct style. They are an excellent reference site for dating clothes.

Good luck with your research.
