Do I need to be a direct descendent i.e. Son/grandson to apply to the MOD for copies of an ancestors military records for personal who served in WW2. Can I apply for my uncles RAF records?

you need to be the Next of Kin. If your uncle is deceased and leaves children and/or a widow, then are the people who have the right to apply.

Government website says -
You can apply for a copy of someone else’s service records if one of the following apply:
You’re their immediate next of kin, e.g. spouse or parent
You’ve got consent from their immediate next of kin
You have a general research interest - you’ll only have access to limited information, unless they died more than 25 years ago

For more details and the relevant application forms, see

And you can only get access if your Uncle is dead.
