Help with Dating this photograph please

Postby PWMmusic » Mon Sep 07, 2015 8:13 am

I thought I knew who these two people were and dated it to about 1880 but the lady in the picture looks older than 66 and that was her age when she died in 1880.
Just wondering if it could be a generation back and the male in the photo could be the father of the man I think it is. possibly dating the photo from clothing more accurately might help me
Any ideas gratefully received :)

I think it may be a generation earlier. In the 1880's women tended to have straighter skirts with rear bustles. In the 1840's the skirts were full all round as this one is.
From photographs of my ancestors the men generally had beard & moustache in the 1880's but beard only in the 1840/50's.

I have had a look through "Family Photographs and How to Date Them" by Jayne Shrimpton and it looks as though your picture could be from the mid 1860s going by the pose and the clothes worn.

One thing to keep in mind is that years ago older women did not change the way they dressed and keep up with fashions. They kept clothes which would be considered well by their sell by date.

I agree with coopernicola that you need to be looking earlier than you first thought.

Thank you all for your help...really great. I will continue to dig but I think I have decided my first incline was right and these are a generation earlier. Thank you
