LEE family Shoreditch

Postby paperchase68 » Fri Aug 28, 2015 1:03 am

Hi I'm hoping to find out a bit more about my 4x great grandfather (Joseph Lee) and his bakery business located on City Road London. All the other Lees lived around Shoreditch. If anyone can help that would be fantastic!! Thanks.

Do you have DoB for Joseph? Or any other family names to help us out, Lee is quite a common name.

LEE family Shoreditch

I guess he would be the Joseph Lee on the 1833 Electoral Roll at 5 City Rd, Shoreditch then. Also 1844, 45, 46. There also appears to be a will for him Dec 1846. I can check later today & give further details, but on my way out just now!

I can see a Joseph Lee of Plumber's Row but he's down as pastry cook or confectioner rather than baker. Is that your man?

I know they would all qualify for Bake Off :) but you normally think of a "baker" as someone who bakes bread. Boulangerie vs Pâtisserie ;)

Nicola has certainly found the right man, it's quite a long will, Joseph Lee of No 5 Plumber's Road City Road
Mentions his daughter Jane Duncan Lee. Who was baptized 21 March 1805, St Leonard Shoreditch, along with her sister Mary Ann - parents Joseph + Sarah, of Plummers Row. (Jane married Francis Boswell in 1833, witnessed by Jane Duncan)

Sorry to digress, is this Sarah's burial?
21 July 1829 at St Leonard Shoreditch
Sarah Lee, age 48, abode City Road

Wondering if Sarah Duncan might have been from Dorking. Baptized there 7 May 1780.
Ruth Duncan (1791) from Dorking married Jarvis Wood and she was later a fruiterer at 2, Plumber's Row. Is on the same census page with the Lees in 1841 and 1851.
In 1861 it might have all been renumbered? William Lee, Hatter, is at 129 City Road
Ruth Wood at 127 is now listed as a Pastry Cook. Certainly a coincidence!

Thankyou so much for your help. I think the baking/pastry business stayed in the family for some time as a descendent called Annie willett was still running it many years later. I would love to find out the name of the shop on Plumbers Row but don't know how. Is there a list of London baking businesses at all?

If you can pm your email address I can send you the images for Joseph's will, you will be able to view them more clear;y as the handwriting is challenging!

This could be a coincidence, however Sarah Duncan, baptised in Dorking on 7th May 1780, had a twin sister called Jane.

I will see what I can find out about the Sarah and Ruth Duncan born in Dorking, just to confirm or eliminate them as relatives of Joseph Lee and Jarvis Wood.

In his will, Joseph left several properties. He also made legacies to several children. I have listed them below in the order they are mentioned, with their baptism details, where found:

Eliza Lee - his youngest daughter - bpt. 8th May 1822 in Shoreditch - she was the main beneficiary of his household goods.

Edward Lee - his eldest son - as yet, no baptism record found in Shoreditch. However, I found a baptism for a Joseph Edward Lee in Dorking in 1801: son of Joseph and Sarah Lee. It is possible this is the correct baptism and that Joseph Edward was known as Edward throughout his life, so as not to be confused with his father. If so, this would suggest that Joseph Lee did marry the Sarah Duncan, baptised in Dorking in 1780.

George Lee - born 29th June 1809; bpt. 21st July 1809 in Shoreditch.

James Lee - bpt. 27th January 1813 in Shoreditch - Sarah Duncan, baptised in Dorking in 1780, was the daughter of James Duncan and Mary Dudley - was James named after her father?

Richard Lee - bpt. 28th September 1815 in Shoreditch.

William Lee - born 17th January 1817; bpt. 23rd April 1818 and 31st March 1819 in Shoreditch - I'm not sure if this is an anomoly or not. However there are two separate baptism records on Ancestry.

Jane Duncan Lee - born 24th December 1804; bpt. 21st March 1805, Shoreditch - wife of Francis Boswell, trunk maker of Oxford.

Mary Ann Lee - born 8th March 1803; bpt. 21st March 1805, Shoreditch - wife of Joseph Reeve, grocer - now in America.

I will also follow up on the Ruth Duncan who married Jarvis Wood.

The Ruth, Jane and Sarah Duncan baptised in Dorking were the sisters of my 4 x great-grandmother, Mary Duncan.
